about

Lamina is the alias of Clarice Calvo-Pinsolle, a multidisciplinary artist based in Belgium. Through her artistic practices, whether sound or plastic, she strives to reveal the vital impulses and evolutionary convergences of the materials she uses. Following in the footsteps of the philosophical and scientific work of Donna Haraway and Lynn Margulis, we might say that Lamina composed with the idea of sympoiesis, giving free rein to the interactions and involutions between musical agents.

For Bajo Tierra, the artist was inspired by the muted bubbling of swamps. Thus, at the start of each piece, the listener is led to observe the apparent, superficial calm of a multi-headed sound complex. In Serpente, Lamina builds a broad sheet of synths, then populates this porous skeleton with a myriad of organisms taking advantage of the transcendence underway.

Yet Lamina's music chooses not to sideline human echoes. Daily Dream summons drums gorged with delay and reverb to call for the use of emancipatory witchcraft. This communion of the living culminates in Feather. This collaboration with Mélodie Blaison brings together the ethereal phrasing of flutes and the tingling of electronics.

In this sense, Bajo Tierra is akin to the concept of alien kinship developed by Baptiste Morizot in his book “Manières d'être vivant”. The elements that make up Lamina's music seem familiar, even intimate at times, and at the end they seem to belong to a parallel dimension. Each texture becomes an enigma, something that, even if untranslatable, fascinates us.
